Using Blogs in the Classroom

For a 6th grade Social Studies class a great weay to use a blog would be to have three groups discuss the three different groups of ancient Latin America: the Incas, the Mayans, and the Aztecs. Each group would be responsible for the history, technology advancements, other attributes of each culture.

The blog would serve as a way to obtain knowledge and share it with the rest of the class both online and to the class. This would be a great way to revamp the old book report or presentation into a real hands on class/group project.

This is also a great place for students to interact with each other and their teacher about specific topics. It also makes the content more interesting by using the internet to gather information about each civilization.

After the blogs are complete each group can present their blog to the class to share the knowledge they obtained.

Let me know how you think this blog would work and how you think it could be better!

  1. It sounds like an interesting and engaging project. Have your students blogged before or will this be their first blogging experience? Would they just be posting comments about their findings or actually uploading information, links, and pictures? I'm sure 6th graders are more technology literate than my 3rd graders. I'm in the process of teaching my students how to scan pictures. They have previously learned how to copy/paste from the internet and they just love learning all the new tricks.

Have you thought about having your students do a Power Point presentation or Photo Story to be uplodad in the blog?

Good luck! I can't wait to see the project.

  2. I think that this is a great idea! This way they can investigate and explore what they need to on the internet and then go right to their blog and express what they found to share with their peers! A good idea would be for them to expand on the information and maybe construct a power point to communicate and put together all of their blogs into one! Let me know how they react to blogging and if they enjoy it!
